Weber State will not renew the contract of longtime women’s basketball coach Carla Taylor.
Taylor, a former Weber State player, was one of the youngest coaches in Division I when she was hired as the head women’s coach in 1988-89.
The Wildcats finished the season at 7-21 overall with a record of 3-13 in the Big Sky Conference.
WSU athletics director Jerry Bovee said the lack of wins was a factor in the decision announced Wednesday.
“It’s just gotten to a point where we felt like it was time for a change,” Bovee said. “The success (of a program) plays a part of it, the support of the community and the campus environment, you have to factor in all of these reasons. As we looked at everything applicable, we needed to infuse some new energy in the program.”
Weber State has no specific timeline for hiring a new coach, Bovee said.
“Our goal is not to do it quickly, but to do it effectively,” he said. ” It will take however long it takes to get the right coach.”
“We’re interested in a developing a candidate pool based on the knowledge of the game and the ability to recruit and understand our demographics and our region.”
