Progressives, young adults, are the chumps of the Obama era

Simple question: What political interest group has been more abused by a candidate these suckers backed? It’s an easy answer — progressives, particularly those under 30, who supported President Barack Obama. The Obama administration has punk-slapped these poor saps to the point that progressives’ interest in 2012 elections are slightly higher than the ratings for the Lingerie Football League. (Click)

GOP/Libertarian Ron Paul’s surge in the caucuses and primaries is due to an influx of under 30s backing him. This is why Paul crosses 20 percent in polls, instead of 8 to 15 percent. About half of those age 16 to 29 are unemployed; the Obama administration doesn’t care about this age group — it’s too busy catering to the deep pockets of labor unions, which reward worker seniority above worker competence. The administration allowed Wall Street to emasculate most of the “financial services reform” bill.

In the War on Terror, ignore the campaign rhetoric from GOP candidates, Obama has channeled George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. Guantanamo remains open; drones are assassinating U.S. citizens; we’re still fighting the Taliban; TSA personnel are allowed to harass paying air customers; and President Obama has signed into law the indefinite detention of U.S. citizens in an undefined war on terror.

Were these the policies that progressives believed they were signing up for when the elected Obama in 2008? I’m sure that most older progressives will take a big shot of whiskey to numb themselves and cast a vote for Obama this fall; where else can they go — to Rocky Anderson? But I wouldn’t be surprised to see a lot of under-30s cast a third-party ballot this year.

The NDAA “Defense Authorization Bill” earmarks $662B for Defense meaning cuts will come from Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Pension, Deposit and Mortgage Insurance.
It authorizes the President or DHS to strip citizenship (Lieberman’s Ex-patriot Act) and use the military to arrest, provide extraordinary rendition, indefinite imprisonment without due process and torture of US citizens.
George Bush Jr referred to the Constitution as a “Damn piece of paper”. Obama has used it from the moment of his botched Oath of Office as toilet paper. Side note: Al Qaeda means “Foreign Toilet”

I would love to see more 3rd party attention. I have never understood how the hardcore progressives saw Obama as anything other than a sort of left-leaning centrist with deep ties to Wall Street.

    • Bob Becker says:

That is precisely what most of the liberals I know saw him as during his campaign. A Democratic centrist with a slight tilt to the left of center on some issues. The only people I’m aware of, then or now, who thought he was a far-left liberal were those on the GOP side who claimed then, and insist now, that he’s a “leftist radical,” a “socialist” and yes, even “a communist.”

The appeal of candidate Obama for liberals [not Democratic centrists] was that he was a better option than the party of George Dubya Bush, John McCain, Michelle Bachman and Sarah Palin. He still is that. Though not by as much as it seemed before he took office.

Great column. As for comments, calling Obama a left-leaning centrist is silly. Only Western lefties are dovish; hard-core Marxists love military adventure, and while Obama has failed to deliver his promises of pacifism, in every other way he’s chased the most radical reworking of government. He’s gone a long way toward nationalizing industries; given us the closest he could get to outright socialized medicine; and even put the government on the fast track to the ash heap of history through spending commitments and anti-capitalist policies that owe everything to collectivist ideology and nothing to economic pragmatism.

Being in the pocket of Wall Street chiefs is not a conservative thing. Socislism favors the hyper-rich who are ruthless and savvy enough to secure personal favors — sidestepping the rule of law by winning the help of executive office holders.

This is the first time I’ve heard of Obama referred to as a moderate or near-centrist. I doubt many lefties really thought that. Moderation has never been the message of “hope and change.”

Left leaning centrists don’t forget to use the bible on their swearing in, hire 32 Czars, conduct the Census under the White House, start wars without Congressional approval or sign defense bills which allow the military to arrest, incarcerate, torture and strip citizenship of US citizens. Delusional dictators do.
