 Last Week:

The first full weekend of playoff action again emphasized the mismatches that have characterized early-round games. Of the 33 contests, 22 were decided by three or more touchdowns and only four by a TD of less.

 Including the first round games in 2A a couple of weeks ago, the home team has gone home happy 27 of 37 times, and, arguably, six of the 10 visiting squads that won were favored.

 Speaking of Happy Teams

Spanish Fork celebrates a school-record 10 victories, eclipsing the nine wins claimed last year and in 1996. At 9-2, Woods Cross enjoys its most victories since its 9-3 season in 1993; the Wildcats have won more – 10 games – just once, in 1989.

 Playoff Notes

Games this week matching teams with the best-combined records: Hurricane (9-1) at Juan Diego (11-0), followed by Alta (9-2) at Syracuse (10-0), Dixie (8-2) at Stansbury (11-0) and San Juan (10-0) vs. South Summit (8-2). Another blockbuster game has Northridge (9-2) at Jordan (9-1).

 Three teams, East (4-7), Fremont (4-6) and Altamont (5-6) survive with losing records.

 Playoff Participation

Timpview has appeared in the quarterfinals for 13 consecutive years and 19 of the last 22. Lone Peak has been in 10 of 12 seasons, Fremont nine of 12 and Alta 11 of 16. Juan Diego has made the quarterfinals 12 straight years, but the first four of those were also the first tournament games for the Soaring Eagle.

 Duchesne has been a semifinalist nine times in 10 seasons and San Juan has made semifinal appearances nine of the last 26, including this year. South Summit is in its fourth straight semifinal and, along with Rich and San Juan, tries to make a third title game in four seasons.

 Playoff Streaks

Juan Diego has captured at least one playoff victory for 11 years in a row, since 2002. Bingham has advanced to the quarterfinals for nine straight years (since 2004) and San Juan for eight.

 Hurricane is trying to become just the eighth team to win at least two playoff games over five consecutive seasons.

 First-time Coaches Still Alive

Three first-year coaches have made the quarterfinal round: Kirk Chambers (Spanish Fork), Carl Franke (Desert Hills) and Cary Whittingham (Timpview).

 Of eight coaches with previous head-coaching experience, but who are new to their school, only Justin Spencer (Woods Cross) remains in postseason play.

 2012’s Most-Improved

Grand County has flipped its season from 2-8 in 2011 to 7-3, an improvement of 5.0 games. Cyprus, which has its most wins since 2007, has improved 4.5 games (5-5 from 0-9) along with Union (5-6 from 0-10) and Woods Cross (9-2 from 4-6).

 Season Shutouts

San Juan continues to lead the state with five shutouts this season, the most for the Broncos since they blanked seven foes, a school high, in 2010. Box Elder, East, Stansbury, Summit Academy, Syracuse and Woods Cross have posted four shutouts – school records for those last four and the most for Box Elder since 1970.

 Milestones

Congratulations to the Davis Darts, who advanced to the quarterfinals by winning twice last week and also picked up the school’s 550th victory in the process. The Darts, in their 97th year, are just three wins away from catching West, the all-time victory leader, but which has played 119 seasons.

 Kudos also to Lone Peak’s Tony McGeary, who now has 50 victories and who also gained two wins last week – one by Timpview’s regular-season forfeit and the other over Brighton in the first round.

 Juan Diego’s John Colosimo hopes to guide the Soaring Eagle to the semifinals and earn his 175th career victory, including 46 at Judge Memorial.

 One Streak Ends

Skyline finished 5-5, ending a state-record streak of 23 consecutive winning seasons (1989-2011). However, the Eagles still have a 24-year streak of non-losing seasons, the longest current streak and fourth longest in state history.

 The longest current streak for consecutive winning seasons now belongs to Juan Diego with 11. Highland and San Juan follow with 10 and Bingham has nine.

 Another Streak Continues

With any points against Syracuse, Alta will have scored in 124 straight games, tied with Lehi (1994-2005) for the third longest all-time streak and second longest active streak.

 Two Logan Record Setters

Luke Falk set state records in two categories: season completions – 330 – and season attempts – 562. He finished with 3,618 season passing yards, the fifth most on record. Falk tossed 36 TDs this season – 18th best all-time. In career completions, Falk ranks eighth with 469 and 10th in career attempts with 793.

 Taylor Compton, established the state record for season receptions with 107. Jesse Braddy caught 93 passes, the fourth-most.

 In career receiving yards, Beau Artist ranks 22nd with 1,778 and Braddy is 23rd with 1,654.

 In the career receptions category, Braddy is seventh all-time with 144, Artist ranks 11th with 127 and Compton places 17th with 116.

 Millard’s Record Setter

Jesse Rhodes finished his high school years tied for first in 100-yard games with 24. In other career efforts, he tied for third in touchdowns scored (65), fourth in rushing touchdowns (60), sixth in rushing yards (4,705) and 11th in rushes (534).

 More Player Stats

Here’s a look at some of the other top season and career performances and where those performances rank among the Top-25 all-time. Players are grouped by their school, listed alphabetically.

 Altamont’s Kyle Foy has 613 career rushes, ranking fifth all-time. He’s tied for 11th in 100-yard games with 18 and ranks 13th in career rushing yards with 4,246.

 Cottonwood’s Cooper Bateman finished his prep years with these career rankings: 10th in passing yards, ninth in attempts, tied for 15th in TD passes with 63 and tied for 16th in TDs-responsible-for with 80.

 His top receiver, Inoke Lotulelei concluded with these career marks: third in receptions yards and receptions, and tied for fifth in reception touchdowns with 32.

 Dixie’s Blake Barney currently ranks sixth in career total offense with 8,332 yards. Other career rankings include eighth in passing yards (6,798), 14th in both attempts (750) and completions (407) and 19th in touchdowns-responsible-for (79).

 Herriman’s Francis Bernard closed his career tied for 14th in 100-yard games (17) and in 25th place for rushing touchdowns (45). Three-year Mustang quarterback Tueni Lupeamanu accumulated 5,824 career yards of total offense, which ranks 24th.

 Jordan’s Austin Kafentzis has accounted for 45 touchdowns so far this season, tied for 12th on the all-time list. He has 8,219 career yards of total offense, good for eighth place and is responsible for 89 career TDs, which puts him ninth.

 Orem’s Taylor Camp ranks 21st in season touchdown passes (35), and over his career, places 12th in passing yards (6,104), 15th in both attempts (744) and completions (402), and 20th in total offense (6,377). Teammate Nolan Gray has 16 TD catches in 2012, which ties him with 10 others for 11th place all-time.

 Pine View’s Prentiss Miller completed his prep years with these season achievements: fourth in rushes (299) and tied for fifth in consecutive 100-yard games (10). In his four-years career, he’s fourth in rushes (671), fifth in 100-yard games (22) and eighth in rushing yards (4,534).

 Timpview’s Jake Lloyd has connected on 42 TD passes this season, tied for the fifth most ever, and has accounted for 43 touchdowns, tied for 19th. Over his career, he’s accomplished the following: tied for 11th in TD passes (69), 22nd in total offense (6,162 yards) and tied for 22nd in touchdowns-responsible-for (75).

 Teammate Dax Raymond has been on the receiving end of 17 of Lloyd’s TD passes this season, and that ties him with five others for sixth place all-time.

 Another Thunderbird, Pita Taumoepenu, is tied for the 17th most sacks in a season with 19.5

 Wasatch’s James Delacenserie made these career achievements in two years at Judge Memorial (2009-10) and the past two at Wasatch: 10th in touchdown passes (70), 15th in passing yards (5,959), 15th in attempts (401), 16th in completions (401), tied for 16th in TDs-reponsible-for (80) and 21st in total offense (6,375 yards),

 Notable Week 12 Performance

Bountiful’s Jakob Hunt set a school record by rushing for 291 yards last week, surpassing Sherif Hadley’s 263 from 1987.
