Jasen Asay was born a sports fan, and his love for sports grew as he did. When he realized he didn’t possess the talent to be a professional athlete, he chose the next best career. While the paycheck for a sports journalist has a few less zeros on the end, he has yet to suffer a season-ending groin injury at the keyboard.
In the summer of his 27th year, Jasen joined the Standard-Examiner as a sports writer. He began his work here in June of 2003 by covering Utah State football and men’s basketball as well as the Ogden Raptors. The soccer-loving scribe has reported on Real Salt Lake ever since the exciting announcement of the birth of the MLS team in July of 2004. In the fall of 2005 he also became the beat writer for Weber State sports and since then he has followed the Wildcat football and men’s basketball teams all over the country.
After earning an Associate Degree at Ricks College (he refuses to call the school by its current name, Brigham Young University-Idaho) and a Bachelor Degree from Southern Utah University with a double-major in communication (broadcasting and journalism), Jasen began his professional career at the Spectrum in St. George, Utah. A little more than two years later he arrived at the Standard-Examiner. His first journalism experience came with the student newspaper at Horizon Middle School in Aurora, Colo.
While he has recently discovered that he’s not as young as he used to be, Jasen still spends a lot of free time playing soccer and basketball, snowboarding and training for the annual Ogden Marathon (His parents think he should spend more time trying to find a wife). As a native Coloradoan, thus explaining his affection for John Denver’s music, he still openly roots for any team from Colorado, unless of course it’s during a game he’s covering.
