A chat with MMA amateur fighter Thomas Hughes

Today’s mini-interview is with Thomas Hughes, a mixed-martial arts amateur competitor from Salt Lake City. A native of Ogden, Hughes, an 155-pounder, scored a decision win over Carson Gregory last month at Lindquist Field (see Hughes (on top) in the SE photo at left.

Here’s the interview:

Provide age, weight, height and MMA fight style.

Hughes: “I’m 23, I fight at 155lbs, I’m 5 feet, 10 inches and my style is Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.”

What sparked your interest in mixed martial arts?

Hughes: “I grew up fighting throughout school and decided to put it to work!

Who are some MMA fighters who inspire you and why?

Hughes: “Jose Aldo is my number one, then Duane the Bang Ludwig is for sure number two. They inspire me a ton!”

What are your goals in your MMA career?

Hughes: “To push myself to my limit and see what I can do!”

What’s the most important training component in MMA?

Hughes: “To actually train and condition as much as possible.

Thanks Thomas, and we wish you good luck in the future. … Tonight there’s a SteelFist card at the Rail Event Center in Salt Lake City. The main even is a big deal, matching top 170-pound pro prospects Mike Arrant and Carl Dieckmann. It’s a five round fight for a Utah title, but more importantly it’s a bridge fight for both; the winner will likely move closer to higher pro levels of MMA. Also on the card is once-beaten 135-pounder Daniel Stratton who fights Gabriel Pelayo. Card is here. … On August 9, SteelFist and Jeremy Horn have competing cards in Salt Lake City and Ogden. On the SteelFist card at the Rail Event Center, Jon Neal, 5-0, of Ogden, fights Scottie Casey, 14-2, in a five-rounder for the Utah lightweight title. A good co-main of 180 pounders matches Jared Hatch versus Utah vet Mike Crisman. Card is here. In Ogden at the Weber Fairgrounds that night, Top of Utah fighters Patrick Reeves and Justin Roberts compete in separate bouts on a Jeremy Horn card. There is also a Jeremy Horn show later this month, June 19, at the Complex. Paris Swain meets Craig Ross in the main bout. Others fighting on the card include Salvador Sanchez and Aaron Sutton. Boxing: There was a good card at the Davis Conference Center last Saturday. Winners included Billy Zumbrun, Eddie Cordova, and Jesse West, who made his pro debut. My SE recap is here. CCC Promotions hopes to have another local card in August. … Two local pro boxers, Cordova of Clearfield, and Logan’s Christian Nava, are heading to Fantasy Springs  Casino in Indio, Calif., to fight on a professional card. Welterweight Cordova fights undefeated Errol Spence, 6-0, and middleweight Nava fights Angel Osuna, 10-3-1. The main event, between light welterweights Frankie Gomez and Demarcus Corley, will be nationally televised. … Several young amateur boxers in the Ogden area are heading to the National Jr. Golden Gloves next week in Mesquite, Nev. They are Mack Storey, Santana Decarlo, Zander Caffall, Kolbie Tiffany Tiffany and Preston Tiffany.
