An interview with MMA pro David Castillo

This week’s mini-interview is with MMA lightweight pro David Castillo (seen at left). Castillo, 16-4, A Top of Utahn and a graduate of Bonneville High, fights on Nov. 16 in Orem on a Showdown card. He’s in the main event, fighting Justin Buchholz for the lightweight championship. Castillo is also spearheading a Thanksgiving season charity drive, with a goal of supplying hundreds of holiday dinners for needy families. You can read about that here.

1A) Provide age, weight, height and MMA fight style.

Castillo: “I’m 30, 155 pounds, 5 foot, 9 inches and a striker.”

1) What sparked your interest in mixed martial arts?

Castillo: “I have always liked fighting so I thought getting paid for it was a good idea. (It) turned something negative into something positive.”

2) Who are some MMA fighters who inspire you and why?

Castillo: “Jeremy Horn, Forrest Griffin, Anderson Silva.”

3) What are your goals in your MMA career?

Castillo: “To be able to compete with the best in the world and provide for my family. Eventually coach and manage fighters.”

4) What’s the most important training component in MMA?

Castillo: “Discipline.”

Thanks David, and good luck on Friday in Orem. There’s a lot of local MMA news. On Bellator tonight, Top of Utahn Rad Martinez fights in the featherweight semifinal. The card airs at 6 on MTV2. On Saturday, Nov. 17, there will be a pro/am MMA card at the Davis Conference Center. Also, fighting with Castillo on the Friday Orem Showdown card are some Top of Utahns, Davis County’s Sean Powers fights Gordon Bell and Ogden’s Francisco Alcantara meets Jarome Hatch; both are highly anticipated fights. In SLC on Dec. 7, a couple of Ogden MMA pros are featured in co-main events. Undefeated Shawn Conroy fight Utahn, Carl Diekmann, and Ogden’s Justin Roberts, with only one loss in his career, fights undefeated Kani Correa. Also, local amateur Aubree Thompson is on the card, fighting Jesse Engler. There are also MMA cards in Price on Nov. 24 and in Logan on Nov. 30. For information, go here. According to local professional Charles Presnell, Nicole Sontag of Logan, is fighting on an MMA Fight Republic card in South Lake Tahoe, Nevada, tonight. Nevada pro boxer, Simon Ruvalcaba, a friend of Presnell’s, will be working her corner. We wish Nicole good luck in her amateur 140-pound fight against Miranda Frievalt.

Boxing: World Boxing Union welterweight champions Chris Fernandez says he’s already at the correct weight for his planned Dec. 15 title defense at the South Towne Expo Center in Sandy against Allen Litzau. Others on that card include Jose Haro and Freddie Martinez.
