Casey rants on national media

I think the national media is actually responsible for keeping America divided into the “left” and “right” camps. It’s not because that’s naturally how things are. It’s because television and radio networks have found a way to maximize their profits by creating their own system of demographics that deliver eyes and ears to the corporate advertisers.

At stake is a lot of money. Billions of dollars. Some may say that politicians are responsible for setting the talking points for the American debate but press secretaries can only do so much to steer the media. Our elected officials are not without blame for our country’s division but in a culture where you can’t get elected if you don’t take one side or the other, they are forced to be perceived as more left or more right than they actually are. If they don’t, the press won’t cover them because no one will tune in for a story about “the middle-of-the-road Senator from wherever.”

The issue of the press’ responsibility to report on our government seems to be more skewed the farther away you get from the local coverage. That’s not to say that local stories don’t look for the sensational but when the top national news story for a week is what kind of dog will Barak and Michelle get for Sasha and Malia.

The Standard-Examiner Blogs Audiocast is all about our blogs and bloggers and the opinions that seem to follow them everywhere.

Today’s show is presented by UtahFindIt.com. The Top of Utah is at your fingertips with Utah FindIt.com!

There’s also lots of stuff going on at blogs.standard.net that we don’t have time to talk about so I’ll direct you to do some reading if you haven’t done so already– Things like Mark Shenefelt and his awkward love of bloody cage fighting. Doug had a chance to talk with the child-star of “Troll 2”. If you know anything about that 1990 film, you’ll have to make sure you read about the critically acclaimed documentary in the post Chatting with the Best Worst Movie director Michael Stephenson.

You’ve started a feature called “Grill the Vegan.” Your first question is from Bill who asks: “I am constantly arguing with people about B12 deficiency. What is your take on it?”

-it’s a myth-watch for nutrition info post(s)-

As with any blog, there are the malcontents who say things like, “your a liberal nutcase who only wants to impose her beliefs on all others”. What’s your reaction to a statement like that?

Before we get started though, I need to tell you about the Standard-Examiner ePaper. It’s a completely digital online version of the Standard-Examiner. It has everything including coupons and comics. Plus it has a section you can ONLY find in the Standard-Examiner ePaper.

You’ve been listening to the Standard-Examiner Blogs Audiocast. My name is Casey Shultz and I’m happy to be your guide. If you have any suggestions that would make our blog site better or you’ve noticed that our tail-pipe has been dragging on the pavement for the last mile-and-a-half, please let us know. My profile at blogs-dot-standard-dot-net has a mail form on it so you can send me a message.

Each week we’ll talk about the issues that show up on the blogs and speak with the bloggers and opinion starters in the Top of Utah. Notable comments also make good fair so discuss the issues at blogs-dot-standard-dot-net.

Here’s a quick overview of some of the bloggers at the Standard-Examiner.

Charles Trentelman writes “Blogging the Rambler” and Mark Shenefelt’s blog is called “Why are you crying?” When I have some spare time I’m going to ask him what, if anything, that means.

Doug Gibson handles the Political Surf and uses the blog and Twitter to deliver mostly right-leaning commentary and opinion. If you use Twitter, you should follow “politicalsurf”. One of the opinions that Doug posted on Facebook related to the Kiss-ins near the Salt Lake Temple got the attention of people and we’re going to find out what he thinks about that next week.

Jasen Asay keeps up two blogs on the site. One is for Weber State University athletics and the other is for Real Salt Lake, the Major League Soccer team.

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vegan is a blog by Catherine Burt that talks about healthy alternative food and lifestyle choices that are compassionate to animals.

Thank you again for listening to the Standard-Examiner Blogs Audiocast. Please read us online at blogs-dot-standard-dot-net and leave your comments because this show is going to be as much about you and your reactions to issues as it is to those starting the topics.
