The Weber State Wildcats will head into the 2009 season ranked seventh in the FCS Now Preseason Poll.
Appalachian State edged out defending champion Richmond for the No. 1 spot. Three other Big Sky schools made the top 25. Montana ranks fifth, Eastern Washington is 15th while Montana State comes in at No. 25.
The Wildcats also had seven players given preseason honors by the Consensus Draft Services. Offensive lineman Kyle Mutcher was named to the First Team and running back Trevyn Smith earned a spot on the Second Team while quarterback Cameron Higgins, defensive end Kevin Linehan, cornerback Josh Morris, tight end Cody Nakamura and wide receiver Tim Toone earned honorable mentions.
Smith and Higgins are among the early candidates for the Walter Payton Award, given to the top offensive player in FCS, while Linehan and Morris are in the mix for the Buck Buchanan Award, which is the defensive player of the year award.

The last time in the top 10? I’m not sure about that. Coach Mac is the man!

I think they were ranked in the top 25 preseason during Jamie Martin years, but not top 10. The highest preseason ranking for WSU ever, I believe. I’m disappointed that Higgins and Toone weren’t in the first two preseason all american polls. I know Mutcher (NFL bound) is a stud and Smith is a proven warrior. Good for those guys. Its going to be an awesome season no matter what.
